Opioids, Overdoses, and Opportunities: Data Driven Harm Reduction & Hands On Narcan Training for Nurses
2.0 contact hours – November 5th, 2026 – November 30, 2028
Nurses are knowledgeable about opioid misuse but may not be aware of the origins of it or how to prevent it since health care policies currently states that nurses should treat pain or alleviate symptoms of pain based upon what the patient is experiencing. The opioid epidemic has impacted patients/families/communities across the nation and health care workers should be equipped with knowledge and skill regarding how to recognize opioid misuse, opioid overdose, impact of street drugs when patients cannot get their hands on opioids, and evidence-based interventions for treatment and prevention of opioid misuse.
Session Objectives:
- Interpret current substance‑use and opioid‑related statistics and describe implications for nursing practice.
- Identify risk factors, clinical presentations, and progression patterns associated with opioid use disorder.
- Explain harm‑reduction principles and evaluate how they improve patient safety and outcomes.
- Demonstrate correct Narcan administration techniques using hands‑on practice.
- Apply harm‑reduction strategies and Narcan intervention skills to a real‑world case study.
- Use trauma‑informed, stigma‑reducing communication approaches in substance‑use encounters.
